1959 – 2011

Martha Bertz M.D. 52, passed on August 26, 2011. She was born in Lexington, Missouri to Sarah and Lester Bertz. Dr. Bertz (Doc Marty) fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a physician by attending the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine in fall of 1977.

Dr. At the age of 24 she graduated with her Doctor of Medicine degree and relocated to New Haven CT where she fulfilled her post graduate training in general surgery at St. Raphael Hospital. Dr. Bertz was board certified in urgent care by the American Academy of Urgent Medicine as well as a certified medical review officer. Dr. Bertz was a member of the American Medical Association, Connecticut State Medical Society, New Haven County Medical Association and the American College of Occupational and Environment Medicine. She served as Medical Director in an urgent care setting in Wallingford for 20 years, additionally serving another five years in private practice with the MidState Medical Group.
An accomplished pianist and vocalist Marty was a person of many interests who excelled at them all. Marty made her home in Burlington Ct in loving life partnership with Mr. JD DeMatteo. She is survived by Mr. DeMatteo of Connecticut, her mother Mrs. Sarah Vollenweider, her father and stepmother Mr. and Mrs. Lester Bertz, her sister and brother-in-law Leslie and John Flagler, and three nieces Erin, Caitlin and Jillian all of Missouri. A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 3, 2011, at 3 p.m. in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext., Wallingford. Her family will receive friends in the funeral home immediately after the service until 6 p.m. Interment will be private.
